Who We Are

Our Story

Situated on a fifteen acre plot of land on the southwest corner of Five Mile Prairie in Spokane, WA, New Horizons Community Church (NHCC) has been impacting lives for Jesus since 1995. “Loving Jesus, loving others, and serving our world”. That’s the ending phrase of the NHCC Mission Statement. Everything we do, every ministry we launch, every person we welcome, is approached from that perspective. We love Jesus, and through His love for us, we are able to love and serve the people around us.

NHCC is an evangelical Christian church, with a Wesleyan-Holiness heritage affiliated with the Churches of God of Anderson, IN and is best described as a family and community centered congregation. The largest demographic of the church’s ~250+ members are families with children in grade school or slightly older. However, there is a strong culture of generational worship at NHCC – in fact, there are multiple families which have at least three generations worshiping, serving and ministering together at NHCC. Our members come from very diverse economic backgrounds – from blue collar to established business owners and everywhere in between – all united in their love for Jesus and commitment to see Him glorified. There is a vibrant children’s ministry which draws many new families from Five Mile through events like our annual Summer Sports Camp. Our value for deep community is reinforced through our Small Group Ministry where we study God’s Word, share our lives and minister to our neighbors through “doing life” together.

Sunday mornings bring us all together through corporate praise and the study of the Bible. It is not uncommon to see members show up thirty minutes early and stay almost an hour after service in order to connect with people they haven’t seen throughout the week.

Community Involvement

We believe that we are called to be a light in our community, not just by having a presence, but by engaging with and meeting the needs of those around us. To that end, we sponsor multiple outreach events every year. Here are a few examples:

The Holmes Sweatshirt Project: Raises funds to pay for the design, purchase and distribution of sweatshirts to every child and staff member at Holmes Elementary. For many children at Holmes, these sweatshirts are the only piece of new clothing they get every year to keep them warm through the cold Northwest winters.

Community Garden: NHCC is blessed to sit on some of the most fertile land in the Pacific Northwest. We have taken advantage of this by building and operating the Garden of Eatin’ – a community garden where church members can interact with the surrounding community while growing a wide assortment of produce.

Summer Sports Camp: NHCC’s unique take on Vacation Bible School – the Sports Camp teaches athletic fundamentals to elementary aged children while focusing on the redeeming power of Jesus.

Trunks of Treats: We annually invite the community to this event on the Sunday preceding Halloween. Besides decorated cars with candy, we have a cake walk, several games, food, and animals for the children to enjoy.

Our Structure

We are an elder-governed church which fully acknowledges:

“The Lord Jesus Christ is the ultimate authority in the church. He exercises His authority through the instrument He Himself ordained for that purpose – the eldership. The task of elders is not to run the church themselves, but to determine how the Lord in their midst desires to run His church. In the day-to-day decisions that face the church, elders are to seek and find the mind of the Lord in any and all decisions, reached after thorough and biblically related discussion and prayer. Thus, ultimate authority in the day-to-day operations of the church is vested in the Lord and no one else.” (Excerpt from NHCC bylaws)
